This is harmful to the respiratory tract and may cause a rare lung condition called graphitosis, which manifests as black sputum or coughing with difficulty breathing. It can also result in heart valve damage and pulmonary fibrosis.
As such, it is important to maintain a proper handling procedure while using these electrodes. This includes taking care not to allow them to come into contact with water as this can cause a chemical reaction that is toxic to the body. It is also advisable to wear protective gear when working with these electrodes as they can release a fine dust that can irritate the eyes and lungs.
The proper handling of these electrodes is vital for the longevity of their life. They need to be regularly inspected for cracks or other damage that can affect their performance. They are also typically stored and transported in a cool environment because of their elevated temperature levels.
